Patch test and allergies
Any cosmetic ingredient, natural or not, can cause irritation or an allergic reaction. Before using a new product or homemade recipe, test a small amount on a small area of skin and wait at least 24 hours. Stop using it immediately if you notice redness, itching, burning, swelling or rash. Seek medical help right away if you have difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
Essential oils
Essential oils are highly concentrated and should never be applied undiluted unless a qualified source says it is safe. Dilution levels in our articles are general guidelines and may not suit everyone. Take extra care, and ask a healthcare provider first, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have sensitive or damaged skin, or a medical condition, or if the product is for children. Some oils (for example citrus oils) can increase sun sensitivity, and many oils are harmful to pets. Keep all essential oils out of reach of children and pets.
Homemade products
Homemade skincare recipes do not contain the preservatives and safety testing of commercial products. Recipes that contain water or fresh ingredients can grow bacteria and mold and should be made in small batches, stored properly and discarded when they look, smell or feel different. Do not use homemade products on broken, infected or very sensitive skin. Body scrubs are not suitable for the face unless an article specifically says otherwise.
