Taste Guru Interview & Coupon Code: Gluten-Free Food Discovery

Gluten-free living is a real consumer need today. Taste Guru is one of the few subscriptions that meets this need through monthly gluten-free sample delivery. I recently had the opportunity to interview owner David Fisher and here is what he had to say about the history, and future, of Taste Guru.
What made you decide to start a subscription box service?
I think the idea of getting a “present” each month is incredibly enjoyable. If you can help people find different gluten free products in a fun way, while helping them solve health issues just makes it a great service.
How did you choose your subscription niche?
I have celiac and thought, how great would it be if someone were to find me great, enjoyable products.
Do you work out of your home or an offsite location?
We have an office in downtown Denver. It’s great being in Denver, this city is such a melting pot of people who love healthy eating. Plus there are a ton of great gluten free companies around us.
Are your ongoing costs on par with what you anticipated?
Some yes, some no. Mostly costs are higher than we expected. We are getting better relationships with gluten free companies, which is helping with our costs, but shipping is the biggest cost at the moment.
Do you handle all of your business operations yourself or have employees?
I have great employees that oversee the business operations and they do a wonderful job. They are a creative group of people that have helped grow taste guru each month.
How do you source the products that will be included each month?
We have a team in place to do that. They are excellent at making sure the products we put in each box taste great and are something people will enjoy. We are also getting a lot of companies asking to have their products included in our boxes.
What marketing avenues did you use to get the word out? Any memorable successes or failures?
We love helping bloggers because they are awesome at helping us get the taste guru name out there. Our social media outlets are great at creating content that brings people to our website. Overall our best marketing is our customers they help fuel our subscribers by word of mouth and we are grateful for that.
What was your biggest surprise – good or bad – with your new business?
How much people really love food. It’s amazing the food culture around gluten free eating. I think people love discovering new food.
What would you change if you had to start over?
It would have been nice to get to know a lot of the gluten free vendors before we launched. It would have made the selection process much easier each month.
Where do you see your business five years from now? Any changes in the works?
Many tens of thousands of customers. We would also like to have a robust offering of being the “taste guru” or tastemaker in the industry. Helping consumers really find the best of gluten free in any market whether it be gluten free restaurants, grocery stores, travel, or products we would like to be everyone’s #1 choice for gluten free information and products.
