Shea Terra Black Soap Review

I recently decided to try Shea Terra Organics Rose Hips Black Soap after reading several rave reviews. The company claims this black soap for the face is “micro-dermabrasion in a bottle.” As we are in the middle of winter and the layers of dry skin have been piling up, I figured what better time to give it a try.
What Is Black Soap?
Don’t be fooled by some of the other products on the market, black soap isn’t just dyed black. The color actually comes from cocoa pods and ashes of plantain. This herbal blend is believed to have been created by the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria who developed the soap to cleanse the skin of parasites and other contaminants.
African black soap benefits the skin in a number of ways. Shea Terra Organics combines black soap with rose hips, aloe ferox, rooibos tea and other healthy ingredients known for their antioxidant, antibacterial and regenerative properties.
Shea Terra Organics Rose Hips Black Soap is marketed as microdermabrasion in a bottle. The manufacturer claims the face wash can help with acne, skin and pore tightening, uneven skin tone and more.
Shea Terra Organics Rose Hips Black Soap Review
I have tried the soap on a few occasions now. The first time was pretty much a bust because even though the label clearly states “soap,” the directions tell you to leave it on for 5 minutes. Therefore, I was expecting something more like a mask. So, I slathered it on and jumped in the shower. Not a good idea. It’s soap! Needless to say, it didn’t make it 5 minutes.
The next time, I put aside my multi-tasking tendencies and let the soap do its thing before hopping in the shower. As was cautioned on the bottle, there was a little tingling and redness while I waited. (While the manufacturer states this soap is great on sensitive skin, it may depend on how sensitive.) On first rinse, I did not notice much of anything. Before exiting the shower however, I did another good rinse with my hands and this time I did notice quite a bit of dead skin on my fingers. Nasty! But, that’s what we came for!
I was very happy with the results and will definitely continue using the product. My skin felt so much better once those winter layers were removed. And as someone with acne prone skin, I am always looking for more natural solutions over the chemical-laden options currently being promoted. Despite the minor irritation while the product was working, I did not notice any long-term redness or dryness that I often experience with those.
