Now that the New Year has arrived many of us are looking to starter living healthier and perhaps a little simpler. Luckily, natural beauty is easy to incorporate into your routine or even use in a pinch if you run out of your favorite product.
Today we are focusing on coconut oil. This magical substance isn’t just for cooking. It also has a number of surprising beauty uses.
Mascara Remover – Today’s waterproof mascaras are notoriously hard to remove. Oil-based cleansers are the way to go. Did you know you can pop open that jar of coconut oil in your cupboard for the same results, if not better, than some of those expensive cleansers? It’s true! Apply it directly or use a cotton ball. Follow-up with your regular face wash. Your skin is going to feel fabulous as well.
Oil Pulling – Coconut oil has natural antibacterial, detoxifying and even whitening properties. While swishing coconut oil around for 20 minutes in the morning is still a little overwhelming for me right now, you can start out small. Even brushing your teeth with coconut oil can reportedly leave you with whiter chompers, healthier gums and fresher breath. Mix it with a little baking soda for an all-natural toothpaste. Some people also mix it with Thieves or oregano oil.
Body Scrubs – One thing I love about coconut oil is that it is a “quick melt.” It’s a solid at room temperature but as soon as you apply any heat it melts immediately – that includes body heat. Just mix a half cup of coconut oil with a handful of coarse sugar or salt for a DIY body scrub. Add a few drops of essential oils for a nicely scented product.
Massage Oil – Throw that oil in the microwave for a few seconds and add a few drops of essential oils for a great homemade massage oil. Lavender is great for relaxing. Peppermint makes for a great foot massage. If you are looking for a little romance, try creating your coconut massage oil with Young Living’s Joy essential oil blend.
Hair and Scalp Treatment – Coconut oil has so many uses when it comes to hair and scalp conditions. Why buy 15 products when you can buy just one? Massage it into the scalp to help treat flakes. Apply a little to tame split or frizzy ends. Leave it on the hair for up to an hour as a deep conditioning treatment. Wash it out with your favorite shampoo.
SPF Body Lotion – Did you know coconut oil has a natural SPF 4? This isn’t enough to get you through a day at the beach, but it is a good place to start. Again, mix it with a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a homemade lotion you can’t live without. (And what a great gift idea!)
DIY Do-It-All Rub – We used to go through a lot of camphor-menthol rub. My mom and grandma have used it forever for everything from chest congestion to muscle sprains to headaches. The main ingredient in most varieties is petrolatum however. That’s no good. Mommypatomus has several recipes available. I recommend the 20 drops rosemary, 20 drops lemon and 20 drops eucalyptus or 20 drops eucalyptus, 20 drops peppermint, 10 drops basil and 10 drops pine which will give you something a little more like the camphor-menthol discusses above. (Many oils are not recommended for kids. Always check first.)
When purchasing your coconut oil make sure it is extra virgin and has not been hydrogenated or refined in any way. It should also not contain any additional colors, fragrances or flavors.
