Hi! I’m Stephanie Mansour from Step It Up with Steph. I’m here with a brand new way to get fit quick, make New Year’s Resolutions that last, and also feel confident about your body once and for all!
My four pillars of health are imperative to health & fitness success: physical, nutritional, emotional, and spiritual. First, let’s start with the physical:
Instead of doing cardio for an hour, get more done in less time by doing interval and circuit training. In order to burn fat quickly, you need muscle. Light weight-lifting combined with cardio will give you a full body workout and help you burn the most fat. You’ll even burn fat in your sleep! Here are a few workout suggestions:
- Alternate between strength training and quick bursts of cardio.
- Use arm weights while you’re doing lower body exercises such as squats.
- Keep your body guessing – what’s going to come next? Never do the same exercises two days in a row.
Portion Control While Snacking
How often do you take a bag of chips or crackers with you on the couch while you’re watching TV or relaxing? Often times, reaching into a bag for more food can turn into autopilot. Instead of realizing an hour later that you’ve eaten half a bag of a snack, here are some quick tips to ensure portion control while snacking:
- When you buy a box or bag of chips or crackers, place servings into plastic bags before you put away the chips or crackers from the store.
- Or, before you grab the whole bag and bring it to the couch, only place one serving size onto a plate, and put the bag away.
- Add some protein, fruits, or vegetables to your chips or crackers so that you’ll feel fuller faster instead of constantly craving more chips or crackers.
Change Your Self-Talk
How we talk to ourselves is very important to our confidence, self-esteem, and how we live our lives. In order to change how we talk to ourselves, we need to take baby steps to reprogram our minds. Do you always look at a certain body part with disgust when you see yourself in the mirror? Or do you eat junk food uncontrollably and then feel guilty afterwards?
By incorporating positive self-talk into your life, you can change your behavior by changing your thoughts! On a sticky note, write down something positive about your body that you would like to believe, such as “I love my beautiful, strong arms!” Place this sticky note on your bathroom mirror. If you’d like to eat one serving size of junk food, place a sticky note in your cupboard that says, “I eat treats and exert portion control,” or “I feel good when I eat good, healthy food.” Place sticky notes around your home or in private places to keep reinforcing positive beliefs about your body and your life.
