So I’m a little perturbed with Birchbox this month. They tried to do the “pick your sample” thing with the women’s boxes this month like they frequently do with the men’s. One of the options was a special edition Everygirl box with some killer samples (Not Soap, Radio Joy-Inducing Body Wash, Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect, Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner, Harvey Prince Hello and Acure Brightening Facial Scrub).
As you can imagine, this took the site down to a non-working crawl. When I was finally able to get the selection choice to take, not only was the Everygirl box gone, but all that was left was the bronzer. Ugh. So I didn’t pick anything knowing I’d get stuck with the bronzer when my box came.
But it doesn’t end there! What really got my goat was getting an email through a secondary email address I use telling me if I became a new subscriber, I could get the Everygirl box. And guess what? You can still get the Everygirl box if you sign up for a new subscription and use code EVERYGIRL. Is there anything worse than a company more interested in recruiting new customers than taking care of existing ones?
Anyway…
My August Birchbox arrived today. It was as disappointing as I anticipated. I won’t be signing up for a second subscription just to get the good samples. I’ll just sit over here complaining. ๐
My samples included:
- ModelCo Shimmer Bronzer
- Nexxus Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer, Shampoo & Conditioner (I’ll keep this)
- Noir Cosmetics Long-Wear Eyeliner in Black
- Supergoop! Forever Young Hand Cream with SPF 40
- Vasanti Cosmetics Detox Nutrient-Rich Purifying Facial Cleanser (keeper)
In Birchbox’s defense, this was a high value box. The two full-size products – bronzer and eyeliner – had a value of $37 alone. Sometimes the “pick your sample” opportunities end upย letting a good portion of customers down in one way or another. The fact that it is apparently still available to newbies is just salt in the wound.
On another note, my husband’s sample choices this month were all items he has already received in past boxes so we are double-bummed Birchbox subscribers this month. Tell me you got something good!

I was disappointed, as well. When I went to choose there wasn’t anything I really wanted either. I picked the Laura Geller cream eyeshadow. I wasn’t real excited about it, but when I received my box it wasn’t even in there. ๐
What a bummer, Andi. I saw other people on the Facebook Page commenting about missing samples again this month as well. I haven’t had it happen yet but my husband did a few months back.
I have to say though that this is the first time I’ve had a problem with my Birchbox and they did give me points in lieu of my sample, which I was ok with.
On the upside you have 7 samples to review! I really liked my box this month. I picked Stainiac which I already know I love. I also got the Harvy Prince Ageless cream, an Amika dry shampoo, Marcelle BB cream, and a cool Cailyn cleansing balm. I will use all these samples and like these brands! I hated last months box so this redeemed. I agree that the picks do add disappointment if say, you have a job and can’t log in immediately :(. I actually like my box better than the Everygirl so I’m happy!
Real bummer for the outside-of-the-home workers, Amy! If that’s the same Marcelle BB Cream I have, you’ll love it.
I got the Stainiac lip balm. The sample is smaller than I was anticipating. I received the eyeliner too. Overall pleased. I was bummed last month when the site crashed and I didn’t get the nail polish I wanted.
Hi, Savvy. I guess you win some, you lose some. Next month will be better, I’m sure. ๐
Hi Angie,
We’d love to hear your thoughts about your new Long-Wear Eyeliner. Hope you like it ๐
I do like it! I have used it several times already.
