Behind the Box interviews typically post on Saturdays, however our next guest, SpicePanda, has a great Mother’s Day promotion available that I don’t want you to miss out on. Read on to find out a little more about this new foodie subscription box and please take advantage of the hefty discount at the bottom of the post.
What made you decide to start a subscription box service?
I traveled around the world in 2012 with my wife, almost entirely so that we could eat as many great cuisines as possible. We had french, thai, italian… you name it, we had it 🙂
When we came home, we found that we still loved to cook, but missed that sense of discovery. So we started SpicePanda!
A subscription box model fits perfectly with what we wanted to do, as part of the thrill of discovery is trying things you’ve never heard of before. That’s why every 3 months our subscribers get a box full of artisanal spices that they wouldn’t normally be able to find in their local grocery store (along with recipes to get them started).
How did you choose your subscription niche?
There are currently a few different subscription boxes centered around the idea of making cooking more convenient. They ship people all of the ingredients for one meal so that they can cook something quickly and without fuss. These boxes are definitely great, but cater more towards the busy cooks.
We want to help provide inspiration and a sense of “discovery” to the home chef who is a food fanatic. They already love to cook, but are just looking for a way to stay inspired and try new flavors.
How long did it take between idea and official launch?
Our first artisanal spice box shipped this past March and we started in October. It took a few months to work out deals with spice makers and get our site up and running.
How do you source the products that will be included each quarter?
We are building a large network of spice makers that are looking to introduce their spices to new customers. We make sure that each spice maker delivers a quality and unique product, while also ensuring that they aren’t stocked in all of the major grocery stores. Our Spring box had spices as varied as Vermont Maple (a spicy cumin/maple blend) to Spanish Paella (a fully pre-portioned spice kit that served 4).
What was your biggest surprise – good or bad – with your new business?
How fanatical food lovers really are! People have been cooking up a storm, but have been clamoring for an easier way to share what they make with other subscribers. We are currently experimenting on better ways to have the community interact so that we can benefit from the new recipes people are creating.
What would you change if you had to start over?
So many things 🙂 But honestly, everything that took time or was a mistake in the beginning has made us a better company as we have learned what (and what not) to do.
Where do you see your business five years from now? Any changes in the works?
Our ultimate mission is to provide cooking inspiration to home chefs. Right now, we’re focused on delivering this mission by introducing home chefs to unique (and delicious) spices, but are looking to see what else people might like to receive. People have enjoyed the exclusive bonus discounts to cool online kitchen stores and we definitely want to explore providing more value through these.
