Erin from Georgia Crafted is sitting down with us today for the next installment of Behind the Box. This subscription service focuses on Georgia-made handcrafted items.
What made you decide to start a subscription box service?
One evening, in mid-May 2013, after our children had gone to bed, my husband and I were brainstorming different business ideas. I mentioned my passion for shopping local, and told him about various “monthly subscription box” companies I had been reading about. I recommended we come up with a monthly subscription/gift box company which would help promote local Georgia artisans and the concept of shopping local.
How did you choose your subscription niche?
I have always had a passion for shopping local. If I have a gift to buy for someone, I would much rather prefer to support my local gift shop than a big box store. I try and shop at different Farmer’s Markets every weekend during Farmer’s Market season. Couple that with my marketing background and constant desire to “promote” people/businesses, it just seemed like the perfect fit.
How long did it take between idea and official launch?
We developed the idea in May 2013 and our site launched on September 3rd 2013. We shipped our first set of boxes on October 7th, 2013.
How do you source the products that will be included each month?
I find many of my artisans at various Farmer’s Markets throughout the state to find the best products. Recently, we partnered with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and that really opened the door to artisans all over the State of Georgia.
What was your biggest surprise – good or bad – with your new business?
Our biggest surprise has been the tremendous positive response about our subscription boxes. While we knew we had a great idea, actually reading and hearing people talk about how thrilled they are with their subscription boxes has been amazing.
What would you change if you had to start over?
I would have started this company MUCH sooner. 🙂
Where do you see your business five years from now? Any changes in the works?
We hope to continue our “monthly subscription” model, but also turn to the go-to gift box company for people. We are rolling out a series of pre-packaged gift boxes for folks to buy for various occasions (hostess/thank you, birthday, new mom, Mother’s Day and more).
You can go to www.georgiacrafted.com to sign up for our monthly “surprise” box or one of our gift boxes. Each box costs $29.99 and that includes shipping to anywhere in the US.
