As a Brand Ambassador I get to publish Bulu Box reviews on a regular basis. This healthy subscription box ships fitness, nutrition, health and weight loss samples by mail each month. I also can’t help but give them a little extra love for being located right here in Nebraska. This week I got to sit down through email and ask a few questions of co-founder Paul Jarrett.
What made you decide to start a subscription box service?
After running the San Francisco Marathon with my wife and Co-Founder Stephanie, we filled our race bags full of vitamins, supplements and recovery gels from different vendors. Looking at our loot, the idea for Bulu Box hit us. Just a few weeks after the plan to build a company to help individuals discover health was in action.
How did you choose your subscription niche?
Our passion is helping people discover health, nutrition and weight loss products that help them feel and perform better. You could say that creating a subscription service was finding our niche within the health and wellness industry.
Do you work out of your home or an offsite location?
When we first began our business plan, Stephanie and I worked out of our apartment in San Francisco. Upon receiving funding, we relocated the company to Lincoln, NE and found a condo with enough room for our growing team and one room in the back for Stephanie and I to live. But early in 2013, our company was outgrowing its space. Stephanie and I moved a few blocks away so our company could continue to expand.
Do you handle all of your business operations yourself or have employees?
Some entrepreneurs have trouble putting their company in the hands of other people. The problem with handling every aspect of operations is that, frankly, there are going to be things I’m not good at. Stephanie and I try to hire smart people and get out of their way. We are lucky to have a team of 10 incredibly talented full-timers who drive the growth of our company.
What would you change if you had to start over?
Every entrepreneur makes mistakes with their companies. It’s impossible to be perfect. I’m not afraid of making mistakes as long as I learn something and take steps to do it better next time. This is an approach I take with our team. Fail fast and learn fast. Would I go back and change anything? Probably not. Because every snafu has led to improvements in our company that we might not have imagined otherwise.
